Eligibility

Age: 18 (may pre-register at 16)

ID Requirements

To Register: Full 9-digit Social Security Number required (mandatory; application denied without it). VA driver's license number also requested but SSN is the primary identifier. Virginia is one of five states requiring the full SSN, mandated by the state constitution.

To Vote: Acceptable ID required (photo or non-photo); free voter ID available

Registration Methods

  • Online: Residents can submit a voter registration application electronically through the state's website, rather than by mail or in person.
  • Mail: Residents can register to vote by completing a paper registration form and submitting it by mail to the appropriate election office.
  • In Person: Residents can register to vote by visiting a designated government office, such as a county clerk's office or DMV, and completing a registration form on site.

Early Voting

In-person early voting available at registrar offices 45 days before election.

Mail-In / Absentee Voting

No-excuse absentee voting available for all registered voters.

Felony Voting Rules

Rights not automatically restored. Must apply to the governor for restoration after completion of sentence.
